RESUMO

With the growing global demand for organically and biodynamically grown fireweeds, little research is being conducted on them, and little is known about how the different growing systems and the process of solid-phase fermentation changes biologically active substances and antioxidant activity. Our experiment was conducted in 2022 in Jonava district, Safarkos village, Giedres Nacevicienes organic farm (No. SER-T-19-00910, Lithuania, 55°00'22″ N 24°12'22″ E). This study aimed to investigate the influence of various growing systems (natural, organic, and biodynamic) and technological parameters (different duration: 24, 48 and 72 h) of aerobic solid-phase fermentation on the change of flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, carotenoids, chlorophylls, and antioxidant activity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for polyphenols, carotenoids, and chlorophylls as well as the spectrophotometric method for antioxidant activity determinations were used. The results of the study showed that different growing systems (natural, organic, and biodynamic) and solid-phase fermentation had a significant effect on the quantitative composition of biologically active substances in the leaves of the fireweeds. According to these data, it would be possible to recommend fermented fireweed leaves grown organically as a source of polyphenols (especially: phenolic acids and flavonoids), leaves grown biodynamically as a source of carotenoids (exceptionally: lutein and beta-carotene) and chlorophyll, and leaves grown naturally for better antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

At present, the consumption of medical plants and functional foods is growing across the whole world. Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium (L.) Holub), an important medicinal plant that has various pharmacological effects (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and others), can improve the state of health and well-being and reduce the risk of various diseases. The aim of this work was to investigate polyphenols (flavonoids, phenolic acids and tannins) and antioxidant activity in fireweed leaves fermented for 24, 48 and 72 h in solid-phase fermentation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for polyphenols and the spectrophotometric method based on quenching of stable colored radical (ABTS•+) for antioxidant activity determinations were used. The results showed that the highest amounts of total polyphenols, total flavonoids and tannin oenothein B in the dried matter were found after 72 h and the highest total phenolic acids after 48 h of anaerobic solid-phase fermentation. The highest antioxidant activity was found after 72 h of solid-phase fermentation under aerobic conditions.

RESUMO

The goal of this investigation was to establish the impact of solid-state fermentation of different durations on the quantitative changes of vitamin C, sugars and photosynthetic pigments in the leaves of willow herbs. The tested leaves were fermented using two solid-state fermentation methods (aerobic and anaerobic) for different time periods (unfermented and fermented for 24, 48 and 72 h). The quantitative and qualitative composition of chlorophylls, carotenoids, sugars and vitamin C were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detectors. Results indicated that aerobic and anaerobic solid-state fermentation significantly decreased the contents of vitamin C, dehydroascorbic and L-ascorbic acids in leaves compared with the unfermented leaves. The contents of total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a were the highest in unfermented leaves and after 24 h of aerobic solid-state fermentation. The maximum content of total carotenoids in leaves were after 48 and 72 h of aerobic solid-state fermentation (149.31 mg 100 g-1 and 151.51 mg 100 g-1, respectively). The application of anaerobic solid-state fermentation resulted in significant increase in the content of total sugars, fructose and glucose in investigated samples. In conclusion, optimization of fermentation parameters allows increasing the content of sugars and photosynthetic pigments in leaves of willow herbs.

RESUMO

Blue honeysuckle berries are a rich source of polyphenols with strong antioxidant properties. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of organic and conventional cultivation on the polyphenols, antioxidant and allergenic potency of blue honeysuckle berry cultivars: 'No 30', 'Jolanta' and 'Indygo' in two growing seasons. Identification of individual polyphenols was performed using the HPLC method; the total polyphenols content and antioxidant activity were determined by spectrophotometric methods. The determination of allergic potency was tested by ELISA. In the second year of the study the total polyphenols were significantly higher in organic blue honeysuckle than in the conventional blue honeysuckle. In both growing seasons, the 'Indygo' cv. was characterized by the highest concentration of all bioactive compounds 3241.9 mg and 3787.2 mg per 100 g-1 D.W. A strong correlation was found between the polyphenol content and the antioxidant activity for organic fruit in both years, as well as for allergenic potency. Contrary to the best bioactive properties was 'Indigo' cv., with the highest allergenic potency (108.9 and 139.2 ng g-1 D.W.). The lowest content of specific allergens was found in the 'No 30' cv. Since honeysuckle is still a new cultivated plant, information about its allergenic potency is insufficient.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Both mesenteric cysts and cystic lymphangiomas are scarce and clinically and radiologically almost identical derivatives, but their histological structure is fundamentally different. Case Presentation. A 52-year-old woman was consulted by a surgeon for a derivative felt in her abdomen. The patient said she felt a growing derivative in the abdomen about a month ago. After consulting and testing, a sigmoid colon mesenteric cyst (13 cm × 11 cm × 10 cm) was found. Complete excision of the cyst within healthy tissues was performed through laparotomy. The surgery had no complications. The initial pathological answer was a simple mesothelial cyst (a rare histological finding). However, immunohistochemical tests were performed that showed that diagnosis was mesenteric cystic lymphangioma (ML). Cystic lymphangiomas that have a link to the mesentery have been described less than 200 times. CONCLUSIONS: Final differential diagnosis between different cystic derivatives is possible only based on histopathological examinations. Mesenteric lymphangioma is most common at a very young age, but in rare cases, it also occurs in adults. All clinicians should increase their awareness of the disease.

RESUMO

At present, the consumption of medical plants and functional foods is growing in the whole world. Rosebay willowherb (Chamerionangustifolium (L.) Holub) is an important medicinal plant that has various pharmacological effects (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and others), can improve the state of health and well-being, and reduce the risk of various diseases. The aim of this work was to investigate volatile compounds, polyphenols, and antioxidant activity in rosebay willowherb leaves fermented for 24 and 48 h in solid state fermentation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for polyphenols and the spectrophotometric method for antioxidant activity determinations were used. To recognize and identify the leaves' fragrances, electronic nose (Alpha M.O.S) measurement technology was used. The results showed that the highest amounts of total polyphenols in dried matter were after 48 h aerobic solid state fermentation (SSF). Antioxidant activity was higher under 48 h SSF compared to the control. The most abundant flavoring compound groups were esters, terpenes, and aldehydes. In unfermented leaves, (z)-3-hexen-1-ol, acetate, hexyl acetate, and trans-hex-2-enyl acetate prevailed, characterized by fragrances of greenery, flowers, and fruits. The undesired esters group compounds, ethyl butyrate and butyl acetate, with pungent odor, were detected after 48 h anaerobic SSF.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Colon perforation caused by the intrauterine device (IUD) migration is rare, but severe complication that can occur years after the insertion. Depending on the location of the injured intestine, the different methods for extracting migrated IUD raging from colonoscopy to laparotomy can be chosen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old female presented with the discomfort in the epigastric area went to the outpatient clinic. A doctor performed gastroscopy and found a polyp. During a colonoscopy, we found a small solid object protruding through the intestinal wall. CT scan showed IUD like "T" shape foreign body, which longest part was protruding a wall of the colon. After these CT findings, the patient informed us that she had IUD inserted almost ten years ago. We found the device with the laparoscopic approach. IUD was removed and the intestinal damage was repaired during the mini-laparotomy. CONCLUSIONS: Perforation of IUD can be asymptomatic, although sometimes it can cause short-term or long-term symptoms. Penetrated IUDs should be removed whenever identified. For intra-abdominal penetrations, the laparoscopic or mini-laparotomy approach is a safe and appropriate method.

RESUMO

Fireweed has recently been recognized as a plant with high antioxidant potential and phenolic content. Its leaves can be fermented to prepare an infusion with ideal antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to investigate and to determine the influence of solid-phase fermentation of different durations on the variation of polyphenols in the leaves of fireweed. Laboratory experiments were conducted in 2017-2018. The leaves of fireweed, naturally growing, were fermented for different periods of time: not fermented (control) and fermented for 24 and 48 h. The evaluation of polyphenols and antioxidant activity in leaves was performed using high- performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additionally, principal component analysis was used to characterize differences in bioactive compounds between fireweed samples fermented at different durations. Solid-phase fermented leaves were characterized by higher contents of oenothein B, quercetin and benzoic acid but had lower contents of quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, luteolin and chlorogenic and gallic acids. Antioxidant activity in short- (24 h) and long-term (48 h) fermentation (compared to control) gave the highest level of regression in 2017, but in 2018 the effect was observed only with short-term fermentation and control. In conclusion, solid-phase fermentation can be used to modulate biologically active compounds in fireweed leaves.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to expose the pattern of the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer in Lithuania in 2005. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 590 patients treated for colorectal cancer in the surgical departments of the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, the Institute of Oncology of Vilnius University, and Vilnius University Hospital Santariskiu Klinikos in 2005 was performed. Demographic data, preoperative evaluation, postoperative complications assessed according to the Clavien-Dindo classification, the quality of pathological examination, and survival rates were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 590 patients, 269 women (45.6%) and 321 men (54.4%), were included in this study; the mean age was 68.3 years (SD, 11.2). Tumors were found in the colon of 274 patients (46.4%) and in the rectum of 316 patients (53.6%). An abdominal ultrasound scan was preoperatively performed in 516 patients (87.5%) and a chest x-ray in 316 patients (53.6%); 35 patients (5.9%) underwent abdominal computed tomography. Endorectal ultrasound was done in 99 (31.7%) cases. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy for T3 and T4 rectal tumors was applied in 42 cases (18.1%). Besides, 211 patients (35.8%) developed postoperative complications with an anastomotic leak emerging in 20 cases (3.4%). Death occurred in 7 patients (1.18%). On the average, 11.15 lymph nodes (SD, 6.02) were found in pathological specimens. Circumferential resection margins were assessed in 58 cases (18.4%). The overall 5-year survival rate was 52.06%. CONCLUSIONS: The preoperative evaluation and the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer were not sufficiently consistent in Lithuania in 2005. In order to improve the treatment of colorectal cancer, standardization or the national database of colorectal cancer is necessary.
